Lander, WY

Lander (population 7,185; elevation 5,358 ft.) lies in one of Wyoming’s more temperate climates. Sinks Canyon State Park (7 miles from the city), in the Wind River Mountains, is a beautiful destination for climbing, hiking, biking, boating, and camping. The historic gold rush towns of South Pass City and Atlantic City are a 30 mile drive. The Red Desert—the largest tract of unfenced land in the Lower 48—is located nearby and offers the opportunity for true solitude. The Wind River Indian Reservation, one of the nation’s largest, is a short drive away and is home to Sacajawea’s grave and a number of cultural activities. Lander is home to the National Outdoor Leadership School, which draws hundreds of eager outdoor enthusiasts each year. The Wyoming State Winter Fair is held every March, and there are 10 parks located throughout the city.
