Ian D. Peggs, PhD, PE of I-CORP International will conduct a one-day seminar and workshop on geoelectric liner leak location and liner integrity surveys. The workshop, to be held October 14, 2010 in Laramie, Wyoming,  is co-sponsored by Solid Waste Professionals of Wyoming, Peak GeoSolutions, and Trihydro Corporation.

This workshop will provide an overview and discussion on the following topics:

  • geoelectric technique
  • allowable leakage rates
  • designing for leak location
  • leak location as an integral part of geomembrane Construction Quality Assurance (CQA)
  • alternate leak location methodologies

In this workshop we will quickly review one of the predominant problems that occurs with leaking liners (the development of whales), and acceptable values for ALRs.  Then we will spend most time discussing the geoelectric methods that are available to locate leaks in soil-covered, water-covered, and exposed liners, and the boundary conditions required for a successful survey for all lining systems cannot be successfully surveyed.  In essence, an electric potential  is applied across the geomembrane which, being an electric insulator, will only allow current to pass through holes.  The potential gradients in the covering soil or water are surveyed (measured) to find the unique potential gradient pattern that occurs at a leak.  If that pattern is found, the leak can be pin-pointed.  Lining systems that cannot be successfully surveyed without appropriate preparation include soil-covered single geomembrane liners and double geomembrane liners with only a geocomposite (geonet or geotextile/geonet/geotextile composite) between them.

This workshop is the first day classroom session of an established multi-day program to certify liner integrity and leak location surveyors.
