stress news item-01

The holiday season is upon us and with it comes celebrations, shopping, traveling, and other activities that may cause individuals to become stressed and overwhelmed. Although most of us experience holiday stress, research shows that holiday stress impacts women and individuals of lower income the greatest.

Worrying about time, money, and the pressure of commercialism during the holidays, however, can be detrimental to one’s health. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), how well individuals manage the responsibilities of the season can have long-lasting impacts on their bodies and minds; therefore, it is important to learn how to cope with the heightened stress of the holidays.

Here is a list of simple tips that can help you manage stress in your life so that you can make the most of your holidays:

  1. Get plenty of sleep and exercise- keeping yourself healthy is paramount so that you can feel your best to tackle your to-do lists this season.
  2. Stick to your holiday budget- planning your spending and sticking to your plan can help minimize some of the money-related stress that may arise.
  3. Remember what is important- gifts and parties are fun, but enjoying time with family and friends is truly what the holiday spirit is all about. Simplify your commitments and expectations to what really matters.
  4. Ask for support- recognize when you’re feeling pressured and overwhelmed, and don’t shy away from asking others for help.

You can find additional tips for managing holiday stress at the APA Holiday Stress Resource Center or the Mayo Clinic website.
