GREATER SAGE-GROUSE CONSERVATION,
DOUGLAS CORE AREA RESTORATION
TEAM
EASTERN WY
Since 2014, Trihydro has supported an energy client and
the multi-stakeholder Douglas Core Area (DCA) Restoration
Team in greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus)
habitat assessments, management, and restoration
within the Douglas Core Area in eastern Wyoming. Until
September 2015, the greater sage-grouse was a candidate
threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. In
2014-2015, the Restoration Team, with ecological and
logistical support from Trihydro, planned and implemented
projects that involved the planting of approximately 40,000
sagebrush seedlings within areas that were previously burned
in large wildfires. Wyoming has led the way in Greater sage-
grouse conservation through its Core Area Strategy, which
strongly limits development within critical breeding areas as
a means of species-level conservation.
OIL PAD DESIGN IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE SOIL DISTURBANCE VOLUMES
& OVERALL ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT/IMPACT
Selecting oil and gas well sites that have minimal impact to the surrounding environment and meet both
the operator’s and landowner’s needs is critical to lessening lease operating costs over the life of a site.
Trihydro assists clients in selecting optimal well sites by evaluating a number of environmental factors;
in many instances, moving a surface location to better fit into the natural topography can override the
additional drilling costs required to maintain lease drainage and spacing offsets. In addition, Trihydro
designs, monitors, and maintains a variety of Best Management Practices (BMPs) maintained over the
life cycle of any oil and gas well site, reducing the impact of stormwater. After drilling operations are
completed, Trihydro works with the client to reduce the “footprint” of the oil and gas well site via an
interim reclamation plan designed to increase re-vegetation success, lessen steep slopes, and reduce
costly erosion controls. These practices as implemented by Trihydro help to protect the environments
surrounding such sites.
