Training: Foundational and Advanced BWON Management and Compliance

8 hours

Trihydro’s BWON training program is designed to support facility compliance with the Benzene Waste Operations NESHAP (BWON) rule. Offered in two targeted modules—foundational and advanced—the training equips both new and experienced environmental professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to manage BWON requirements.

The foundational module provides a comprehensive introduction to the BWON rule and focuses on regulatory fundamentals, compliance pathways, and reporting requirements. Participants gain hands-on experience with BWON compliance tools and exercises. Delivered in a single day, the foundational module features interactive classroom instruction.

Topics include:

  • Overview of the BWON regulation and applicability
  • Key definitions and compliance determination
  • Control requirements and treatment standards
  • Creating Total Annual Benzene (TAB) reports and using the TAB Tool
  • Compliance options and recordkeeping expectations
  • Interactive Q&A and compliance scenario exercises

As part of the course, instructors demonstrate how Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras can be used to survey waste management units and support BWON compliance. The training also explores how regulators are applying OGI technology during site inspections and audits.

The advanced module dives deeper into BWON implementation strategies, offering insights gathered from decades of field experience conducting BWON audits. This session is ideal for facilities aiming to strengthen or streamline mature programs. Participants complete the advanced module in one day through focused, classroom-based learning.

Topics include:

  • Point of waste generation (POWG) considerations and commonly missed streams
  • Audit preparation and expectations (POWG, TAB, and waste management units)
  • Common violations and enforcement trends
  • Best management practices for ongoing compliance
  • Elements of sustainable, low-cost BWON programs
  • Informal discussion and Q&A

Training is tailored to your facility’s operations and can be delivered onsite or virtually, with onsite sessions preferred to better align with facility-specific conditions.
