WASTE REDUCTION & RECYCLING

Reducing waste is one of Trihydro’s key
sustainability priorities. Since initiating our
sustainability program, we’ve made great
strides in our waste reduction initiatives and
continue to look for new ways to improve
our business practices. Whether it’s diverting
waste from landfills, sponsoring community
recycling programs, or incorporating
distribution of electronic documents, we are
making a difference and making progress.

WASTE AUDITS

In April and June of 2015, Trihydro conducted
waste audits of trash and recyclables generated
by the corporate headquarters building
(Corporate) and the corporate west wing
extension building (West Wing). Each audit was
focused to assess the materials generated in
one day within our facility. The purpose of the
audit was not only to analyze the amount and
types of waste generated by Trihydro’s employees and operations but also to identify the following:

      • Create a baseline for gauging the effectiveness of current waste minimization strategies
      • Determine the efficiency of our existing recycling and waste management program
      • Identify specific waste streams to target for future reduction
      • Develop strategies to support employee engagement and a sustainable work culture

The audit was conducted for each building on two different dates and averaged to account for variability in employee
attendance and day of the week. Based on sample results, the Corporate building diversion rate (to recycling) is
approximately 44%, with the West Wing building diverting approximately 62% of waste production. Additionally,
58% of the materials in the Corporate waste stream and 25% of the West Wing waste stream were items that could
have been recycled based on our current recycling program. Paper accounted for 51% of the Corporate waste and
19% of the West Wing waste. Paper accounted for 95% of Corporate recycling and 98% of West Wing recycling.
