Mining Industry

CONNECT WITH US

The mining industry plays a crucial role in the economy, providing the raw materials needed for the products and technologies that modern society relies on every day. The mining industry is also closely regulated, and operators are responsible for balancing a network of compliance and environmental considerations with business demands.

From rehabilitating abandoned mine lands (AML) to helping to permit active mining operations, Trihydro offers engineering and environmental services to help the mining industry operate safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Our team is experienced in the technical disciplines pertinent to the mining industry including permitting, hydrogeology, geochemistry, geology, civil engineering, environmental remediation, and project management.

ABANDONED MINE LAND

Since 2000, Trihydro has assisted AML programs across the country in navigating the reclamation landscape. Abandoned, inactive, and legacy mining and milling operations can pose serious challenges for land management and resource agencies and mining companies, including managing risks to human health and the environment.

AML reclamation can be a complex undertaking. Depending on the site’s history, there may not be records regarding land use, and previous mining activities may have caused hazardous conditions. Common scenarios encountered at AML sites include impaired streams; aging infrastructure; hazardous waste; and dangerous highwalls, impoundments, waste rock piles, shafts and sinkholes, and embankments. Reclamation approaches need to consider safety, environmental impacts, stakeholder concerns, and budget.

Working with multiple AML programs has provided Trihydro exposure to region-specific issues as well as different approaches to reclamation and program management. We have shared lessons learned and best practices across programs.

MINE RESTORATION

Completing mine closure efficiently is critical to a mining company’s bottom line. As mining operations transition to full-time reclamation, the focus shifts to creating stable landforms, establishing vegetation, and returning the site to the approved post-mine land use — all within schedule and budget.

One of our key strengths is our ability to develop restoration plans that are customized to each site's specific needs and goals. We work closely with hard rock and soft rock...
