Our Volunteers Share Their Stories

Daniel Kricken: Big Laramie Valley Volunteer Fire Department,
                          Laramie, WY

“I am a volunteer firefighter/EMT for the Big Laramie Valley Volunteer Fire
Department. I’ve been on the department for 5 years. I currently am
taking classes to be certified as Structure firefighter type 1, and Engine
                        Boss for wildland fires.”

Thyra Page: Elks Lodge, Laramie, WY

“I serve my community by volunteering at charitable giving events through the
Laramie Elks Lodge. I also serve as chair of the Hysong Memorial Fund through the
Elks, which helps children in need during the holidays.”

Carol Kinzer: Water Environment Federation, Laramie, WY

“I participate in a few projects with the Water Environment Federation (WEF)
each year. As a member of the Students & Young Professionals committee,
we put on two events at the host city of the annual WEFTEC conference. I
chair an event called WaterPalooza, where we organize a water-focused
fair at a local elementary school for the students to learn about more about
the importance of water through hands-on activities at a variety of booths.
The day brings water-related professionals and students together. We also
implement a water-related community service project as a way of giving back to
the host city. Last year we installed an outdoor classroom and rain garden
that will improve storm water runoff.”

Lynn Edlund: Mission Flight, Signal Hill, CA

“I volunteer with Mission Flight, a non-profit organization that flies volunteers and
medical/dental supplies to areas of need. Last year was opening day for the dental
clinic in Mexico. All the services at the clinics are at no cost to the families. While
I have no dental skills, nor do I speak Spanish, I am apparently good at playing
tag, coloring, and doing crafts with the kids. After playing with kids, I help out in
the dental clinic. I establish work zones (in proper PPE of course – gloves, mask,
disposable jacket) to keep the sterile instruments separate from the biohazards. We
are returning this year with backpacks. After seeing the dentist, each child will receive
a backpack filled with a hygiene kit, school supplies, socks, and a toy.”
