Clarifier Retrofit and High-Service Pump for Water Treatment Plant

Water Treatment Facility
Marble Falls, TX

Trihydro partnered with the City of Marble Falls to retrofit the original water treatment clarifier and design high-service pumps, completing the work on an accelerated schedule to meet peak demand.

A few years prior to this project, the City of Marble Falls added a new clarifier to its water treatment plant. The city later decided that the original clarifier should function similarly to the new one and asked Trihydro to renovate it. During Trihydro’s inspection, we found that the two clarifiers were not hydraulically balanced. To allow both units to function effectively, our engineering approach required modifications to bring both clarifiers to the same hydraulic grade line (HGL).

The project involved replacing one existing high-service pump with a new larger pump featuring variable frequency drive (VFD) controls to increase the plant pumping capacity. Because the city operated with a single clarifier during low-flow periods, it was critical to expedite the project schedule and complete renovations before peak demand began.

Shaping an Effective Strategy

During the preliminary design phase, Trihydro conducted a field survey and interior examination to identify structural issues that could affect renovation. These early assessments were critical in shaping a renovation strategy that prioritized efficiency and long-term performance. Early coordination with equipment suppliers and contractors helped chart an effective approach to the clarifier renovation. Our team collected hydraulic data on the high-service pump station, calculated suction side hydraulics, and assessed how piping or structural issues might affect pumping capacity. On the discharge side, we calculated the average and peak total dynamic head (TDH) for the new pumps and the entire pump station to determine pump sizing. Additionally, we managed the supervisory controls and data acquisition (SCADA) configuration to align with operational goals.

Supporting Streamlined Reviews and Approvals

To support regulatory compliance and minimize delays, our team maintained ongoing communication with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), helping to facilitate timely reviews and approvals in later project phases.

With the final design approved on schedule, Trihydro prepared the construction bid and recommended an award. Following City Council approval, our team managed the clarifier renovation, ensuring the City of Marble Falls could continue delivering reliable, high-quality service to its customers.
