Environmental Remediation

REQUEST SERVICE

Trihydro has managed environmental remediation projects since 1984, offering technical and regulatory services on thousands of projects, including some of the most complex sites in the nation. We guide our clients through the environmental remediation process from initial “big picture” remediation strategy development to implementation and then to remediation process optimization and site closure. Trihydro’s engineers, geologists, and scientists have formal training and hands-on experience, leading to practical and technically sound remediation design and implementation.

Our team has experience designing and installing ex situ and in situ remediation systems, including groundwater extraction, total fluid extraction, air stripping, soil venting, bioremediation, chemical oxidation, chemical reduction, monitored natural attenuation (MNA), enhanced attenuation, dynamic groundwater recirculation, carbon adsorption, air sparge, phase separated recovery, and more. We also engage in ongoing work with universities, laboratories, regulatory bodies, and vendors to develop new methods related to emerging contaminants and complex technologies. For example, our team has supported the commercialization of a new bioaugmentation culture, optimized application of in situ technologies, and pioneered solar-powered systems for air sparging and groundwater recirculation.

Environmental remediation is often subject to stringent regulations, and a comprehensive understanding of the applicable regulatory landscapes can dramatically improve project outcomes and cost-effectiveness. Our nationwide team of regulatory specialists have state-specific knowledge of current and forthcoming regulations, and are available to advocate on behalf of site owners’ and operators' remediation goals.

Remedial Strategy Development

REMEDIAL STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT

Once the decision to remediate a site has been made, the first step involves remediation strategy development. The basis for remedial strategy development is the conceptual site model (CSM), which is the concise depiction of the nature and extent of impacts, the physical and biogeochemical conditions that affect fate and transport of contaminants, and the proximity of environmental receptors. The CSM outlines the “problem statement” that environmental remediation needs to solve. Additionally, the end-state vision must also be defined (i.e., endpoints to be achieved and the necessary ...

Active Remediation Systems

ACTIVE REMEDIATION SYSTEMS

Active remediation systems operate continuously to treat contaminants. This type of approach is more commonly used for higher concentration source areas or when site-specific conditions dictate that physical control is needed to prevent the spread of impacts. Some legacy active remediation systems installed decades ago continue to operate due to regulatory requirements or other site-specific conditions; however, moving from active to more passive systems can be a key project milestone to enhance efficiencies and reduce longer-term project costs.

In Situ and Passive Remediation

IN SITU AND PASSIVE REMEDIATION

In situ (Latin for “in place”) remediation involves treating contamination in the subsurface rather than physically extracting it for treatment above ground. In situ remediation offers many technical benefits that can achieve better outcomes and/or reduce the time and cost of remediation. Specifically, carefully designed in situ remediation systems can help mitigate the adverse effects of geologic heterogeneity, back-diffusion (also termed matrix diffusion), or rate-limited dissolution of free product.

Remediation Process Optimization
REMEDIATION PROCESS OPTIMIZATION

Remediation process optimization (also called remedial process optimization, or RPO) is the deliberate process of evaluating and enhancing remedial programs. RPO’s ultimate goal is to achieve endpoints more quickly and at a lower cost. The data on which RPO is based are the as-built remedy (additional information always comes to light in environmental construction), actual operation and maintenance (O&M) requirements of the remedy, performance outcomes achieved, and costs. RPO has several general elements, each of which can result in improved system performance. Exit strategies are ...

Remedy Selection, Design, and Implementation
Dallas, Texas

Trihydro designed and implemented semi-passive bioremediation technologies at a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) facility to remediate the offsite migration of chlorinated solvent impacts, leading to upwards of 99% reduction in concentrations of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE).

Columbus, OH

When a train partially derailed and impacted a Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) maintenance facility, Trihydro supported response efforts and soil remediation in coordination with United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) requirements.
