New Year’s is one of the most joyous and fun holidays of the year. Additionally, New Year’s Eve is also one of the most dangerous nights of the year. With many people travelling and celebrating, there is an increased chance of travel related injury. Many attempt to make this night one to never forget, so it is increasingly important to pay attention to your own health and safety. By not ensuring you and your friend’s well-being, you put those around you at a larger risk for accidents to occur. Below you will find our tips to help you stay safe and healthy during this New Year weekend:
1. Have a plan Make sure you know the plan for the night and have confirmed with others your location and who will be with you. Let a designated contact know your plans and when you plan on returning home.
Know your way back home or to your hotel – especially if you are in a new place, be sure to familiarize yourself with the best route back. Don’t rely solely on your phone for directions.
2. Drink safely If you are drinking alcohol, pace yourself. This article can help you determine your limit.
Make sure you are drinking water in-between drinks. This will help your body metabolize the liquor, keep you hydrated, and prevent getting too drunk. In addition to drinking water, be sure you have enough food in your stomach to combat the alcohol consumption.
Know how you will be getting home. January 1st typically has a higher percentage of deaths related to alcohol– so don’t chance it. Have a designated driver or use a taxi service such as Uber, Lyft, or a local service.
3. Fireworks Follow the firework laws for your city / state. If you are unsure, you can find local laws here. And remember, most cities host a firework event, just check your city event calendar to find where yours is being held!
If you are able to use fireworks, make sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby, and remember to never try to relight a firework if it does not go off. Finally, make sure everyone keeps a safe distance!
4. Pet Safety Take extra precaution to think of your furry companions. Remember that loud sounds may frighten them and scared pets may become lost, hurt, cause accidents, and may even bite out of fear. Have a plan for your pet just as you have one for you!
