Vehicle safety is a safety focus area because we frequently drive for work or personal matters throughout the week. In 2019, an estimated 4.4 million people were injured and required medical attention due to vehicle accidents. The good news is that some vehicle accidents are preventable by practicing simple, proactive safety measures.
G.O.A.L.
Trihydro uses Get Out and Look (G.O.A.L.) as a best practice whenever we are about to enter a vehicle. G.O.A.L is a quick and easy tool to help us remember to thoroughly survey a vehicle’s surroundings. Hazards can be identified and eliminated by conducting a pre-drive vehicle inspection (i.e., a vehicle walk around).
When to Use G.O.A.L.
G.O.A.L. is useful any and every time you prepare to enter a vehicle, but it can be especially useful when:
- Your vehicle is near tall vegetation, which may cover nearby hazards.
- Ice or snow cover your path.
- Parking spaces are tight.
- Backing your vehicle.
- You are navigating a new path or unfamiliar exit route.
As you evaluate the area around your vehicle, you can also check for:
- Objects in your vehicle’s path.
- Loose parts, cracked windows, leaks, etc.
- The wiper-blade condition.
- Properly inflated tires.
- Spare tire condition.
- Secured loads.
Why We Use G.O.A.L.
Performing routine driving tasks can lead to a false sense of security. Taking the time to evaluate your vehicle and the immediate surrounding area can make a difference between an uneventful day and a reportable incident where someone may get hurt. Weather and physical conditions can change while vehicles are parked; a quick walkaround can help you identify and eliminate potential hazards.
